Default Landlord kept my security deposit

My landlord kept my $3,000 deposit! The list of deductions I received from him was brief, it basically said: Wear and Tear $3,000. Wear and tear? I lived there for 10 years! Of course there is wear and tear. I feel like I was totally screwed.

Upon my move-in, I received the house without it being freshly painted because I needed to move in. He did a "touch up" a month into my tenancy, but it was noted that there was a room requiring painting.

My question is, what can I do, if anything, to get my deposit back?

Laws vary from state to state. Where was this home located -- what state?
