My mom made her checking account a joint account with me in case of an emergency some forty years ago. For the last ten years I have been paying all her nursing home expenses out of this account. I am concerned that if something happens to me there is no one else authorized to access her account. I have an older sister who could take over for me, but how do I do that now that she is 92 and suffering from dementia?

Does your mother have a Last Will and Testament and if so do you know where it is? Does she have assets besides the bank account that would need to be probated? Have you made your Will naming your brother a beneficiary? I'd suggest you give your bank a call and ask them about this to see if they have a solution for you.
