Default Congressional Approval Rating Falls to Single Digit for First Time Ever

The percentage of voters who give Congress good or excellent ratings has fallen to single digits for the first time in Rasmussen Reports tracking history. This month, just 9% say Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Most voters (52%) say Congress is doing a poor job, which ties the record high in that dubious category.

Last month, 11% of voters gave the legislature good or excellent ratings. Congress has not received higher than a 15% approval rating since the beginning of 2008.

The percentage of Democrats who give Congress positive ratings fell from 17% last month to 13% this month. The number of Democrats who give Congress a poor rating remained unchanged. Among Republicans, 8% give Congress good or excellent ratings, up just a point from last month. Sixty-five percent (65%) of GOP voters say Congress is doing a poor job, down a single point from last month.

Voters not affiliated with either party are the most critical of Congressional performance. Just 3% of those voters give Congress positive ratings, down from 6% last month. Sixty-three percent (63%) believe Congress is doing a poor job, up from 57% last month.

Just 12% of voters think Congress has passed any legislation to improve life in this country over the past six months. That number has ranged from 11% to 13% throughout 2008. The majority of voters (62%) say Congress has not passed any legislation to improve life in America.

Voters hold little positive sentiment about the future. Just 41% find it at least somewhat likely that Congress will address important problems facing our nation in the near future, while 55% find this unlikely.

Despite these negative attitudes towards Congress, Democrats continue to enjoy a double digit lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot.

Most voters (72%) think most members of Congress are more interested in furthering their own political careers. Just 14% believe members are genuinely interested in helping people.

A separate Rasmussen survey found that half of all voters believe America’s best days are in the past. However, another survey found that 64% of voters also believe that the world would be a better place if more countries were similar to the United States.

The Democrats are right, we DO need a change. A change back to before they took over… Remember this come election time… They are claiming we need change and are blaming the Republicans for everything...

A little over a year and a half ago:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we've seen:

1) Consumer confidence has plummeted;
2) The cost of regular gasoline has soared to over $4 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 15% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of all American homes are in foreclosure…

The Dems harp on the President's approval rating while at the same time their approval rating is a single digit, the lowest ever.

America voted for change in 2006, and we got it! Let’s not make the same mistake again…

In the latest issue of AARP magazine, there is an article “Going Hungry in America.” The article stated that food price inflation averaged just 2.1 percent a year from 1996 to 2006; however, from June 2007 to June 2008 it jumped 6.1 percent. Further, it stated one Georgia food assistance program estimates that the number of older people coming in increased 100 percent in the past year.

Remember two years ago when Nancy Pelosi took over as speaker of the House and said how there would be change. Good Lord, Nancy, I didn’t think that your change would be super high gas prices during your watch and seniors (and I’m sure others) being hungry. If this is what you meant by “change,” please no more.

This article should make us realize that if we are able, we need to be more generous with donating canned goods (and cash) to such organizations as FISH, St. Vincent dePaul, the Rescue Mission and the many church organizations that collect food for the poor. While Nancy eats lobster, her hungry constituents are delighted with a can of soup.

In the future when the politicians talk about “change,” let’s make sure they give us their meaning of change.

Rita W.
