Default Catering Cancellation 6-Months Notice

I booked a wedding and signed a catering services agreement. Unfortunately things didn't work out and I had to cancel, which I did 5 1/2 months before the wedding date. The owner of the catering company told me I had to cancel 6-months before the event by law and he could charge me for the whole amount I paid. One of his managers asked me to come down and get half of my deposit back.

Are they lying to me? Aren't I entitled to a full refund?

Did you notify them of the cancellation by some sort of writing, and did you keep a copy? I would sue them in Small Claims court out of general principle.
